The village of Shyroke faces numerous challenges, and its future is inextricably linked to the implementation of the ‘Assistance to Frontline Households’ project.
This project is a joint initiative of the Shchedryk Charitable Organisation and the World Food Programme (UN). Ms Vira, a local resident of Bashtanka district and a participant in the project’s survey, shares her story:
Due to the full-scale invasion, all children and women with children were forced to leave. Only those who could not or did not want to leave their homes remained in the silence of the deserted village. There was shelling every day, and all the houses on our street were damaged,” Vira recalls.

Her husband Serhii and his neighbours rallied together and supported each other, as there was no one to wait for them. Serhii was wounded during one of the shelling incidents. Fortunately, he was taken to hospital in time. Many months of treatment and rehabilitation lay ahead. Together with their grandchildren, the couple spent 8 months in hospital in Uman.
After Snihurivka was liberated and the intensity of shelling decreased, they returned home. Thanks to the support of various organisations and the EU Recovery Programme, the family managed to partially rebuild their destroyed home. But, as Vira says, it is impossible to return to the pre-war comfort.
