New Life After 50: In Mykolaiv, a Female Teacher Switches to a Career as a Driver

Valentyna Hodun, a 59-year-old teacher, decided to make a dramatic change in her life by learning a new profession – becoming a trolleybus driver. With the support of the “Shchedryk” charity foundation and the international NGO “Oxfam”, Valentyna became one of 30 students training to be a driver at the Mykolaiv Electric Transport Company (KPT “Mykolaivelectrotrans”).

The company’s director, Yuriy Smyta, shared that the training has been underway for a month. The students have successfully completed the theoretical part and are now moving on to practical training.

Valentyna herself shared her motivations:

“After 40 years of teaching, you’d think I’ve seen it all. But now, with children and grandchildren, I realize I want more. I enjoy watching trolleybus drivers and seeing how responsible they are. That’s why I want to be like them, to contribute to society.”

Other students also shared their impressions. They noted that the training is interesting and engaging. It’s especially gratifying that from the very first days of practice, they can feel the support of the instructors.

The “Shchedryk” charity foundation and Oxfam organization provide comprehensive support to this project. Our goal is to help people improve their lives and acquire new professions.

This story proves that it’s never too late to dream and change your life. Valentyna is a shining example of how one can fulfill their aspirations even at a mature age.
